News – How to keep your swimming pool free of Coronavirus

Do you want to know how to disinfect your pool to keep it free of Coronavirus?

It’s summer and nothing is more pleasant than enjoying a good swim in the pool. However, in view of the situation we are suffering due to the Coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19), it is important to consider the recommendations regarding the disinfection and cure of the swimming pool.

The aim of this article is to help you to make your pool safe and free of Coronavirus by receiving the appropriate treatments. In this way, you will be able to enjoy it without having to worry constantly.

At *Scientia, the Digital Information Repository of the Department of Health of the Generalitat de Catalunya, you will find at your disposal information and documentation for professionals regarding the criteria for the opening and operation of public swimming pools. Although the information is for public swimming pools, you can apply the same criteria for cleaning, disinfection and water treatment to your own private pool. Therefore, in this article we will summarize the most important points to be carried out.

Cleaning and disinfection of the pool facilities
  • Keep the installations clean and disinfected. Once you have cleaned with the usual detergent, you can disinfect everything with products that are registered in the Register of non-agricultural pesticides or biocides of the General Directorate of Public Health, Quality and Innovation of the Ministry of Health.
  • You can use 0.1% bleach (by diluting the bleach which has a concentration of 5% with water). This can be done by mixing 20 ml of bleach in 1 l of water or by adding 1 part bleach to 49 parts water.
  • If you have steam, this can also be useful, as several studies have shown that coronaviruses are inactivated at temperatures above 70 °C (and steam can produce temperatures above 100 °C).
  • Do not mix different products to avoid the production of gases that can be toxic or generate dangerous chemical reactions.
Swimming pool water treatment
  • Clean and disinfect the domestic hot water circuit in accordance with current regulations on the prevention and control of legionellosis.
  • You must also clean the walls (if you have emptied them), as well as check the treatment system before refilling it.
  • It is also necessary to carry out an analysis of the pool water to confirm compliance with the technical and sanitary criteria for swimming pools.
  • It is very important to keep the pH and chlorination of the water within the parameters recommended by official bodies.
