Each tree has specific pruning needs, including the time of year when pruning should be done and the type of pruning to be applied.
Pruning is a necessary process for trees to develop correctly and remain healthy. However, it is important to be aware of when to prune and when not to prune. If a tree needs to be pruned, we need to know what the purpose is in order to know what type of pruning needs to be done and when to do it.
The most important thing when carrying out this task is to respect the natural structure of the tree and to do it when it is strictly necessary.
We can divide the types of pruning into two main groups:
-
Formative pruning (on young trees)
This is carried out between one and five years after the tree has been planted in order to ensure that it develops well. If this is not done, the tree will grow freely and take on a more “wild” shape. It is also important to do this to avoid more complex pruning in the tree’s adult years and cuts that will take longer to close. It should be borne in mind that each species requires more or less pruning.
-
Maintenance pruning (on adult trees)
This is carried out on adult trees, is aesthetic and will have to be done throughout the life of the tree. Normally, it is carried out to maintain the correct flowering or fruiting depending on the species, to eliminate excess elements or to lighten branches due to excess or weak branches. Although there are different types of purpose and depending on what we want to achieve, one action or the other will be carried out.
In October the pruning season begins for many trees, especially for those that are located on public roads. At Punt Verd we prune all types of trees and we have specialized workers. Ask us for information without obligation!
